✨Devotional Thought

The most powerful assignments in marriage rarely come wrapped in comfort or clarity.

We have all heard the story of Mary and Joseph—how Mary was given the assignment to birth the coming Messiah before she had ever been with a man. Mary, still a teenager, was now pregnant out of wedlock while betrothed to Joseph, the man she was engaged to—but not the father of the child she carried.

What many may miss is that Joseph initially planned to put Mary away—to quietly call off the engagement. He could have walked away. He had every reason to protect his reputation. Yet just as an angel had spoken to Mary, an angel also spoke to Joseph. In obedience, he chose to stay. The two were married, and Joseph became a stepfather to a child who was not biologically his, but divinely entrusted to him.

Sometimes our dreams of a perfect, loving family do not look the way we imagined. You may find “the one,” but that love may come with sacrifice. God does not wait for perfect circumstances before giving us divine assignments, and yet we are still required to be obedient—even when we do not know the details or what obedience will cost us.

For Mary, obedience almost cost her Joseph. It certainly cost both of them their reputations. There were whispers. There was gossip. Mary even left home for a short season. Still, she held on to the promise.

Mary was young and likely did not fully understand the weight of what she was carrying—the uncertainty, the danger, and the divine responsibility. Like many mothers, we hope for healthy children and believe we understand the weight of that responsibility, but we never fully grasp it until we are living it. That is why it is so important to have God—and a supportive partner—walking alongside us.

God sometimes calls couples to obedience without revealing the entire process. Scripture records few words from Joseph, yet his actions spoke loudly. He protected Mary, honored God, and safeguarded Jesus. Husbands are called to cover their wives and love them as Christ loves the church.

God does not give responsibility He believes we cannot handle, even when we doubt ourselves. God does not doubt.

A stable, not a palace.
A journey, not rest.

Obedience rarely looks glamorous—but it is always purposeful. God does not wait for perfect conditions, and just as in marriage, we should not wait for perfect conditions to follow God’s plan for our lives.

You may not be birthing a baby this year, but your marriage may be birthing something else—something divine—that God intends to use for His Kingdom.

✍🏽Challenge

Ask God to reveal how your marriage can carry His purpose in this season. Write a shared prayer dedicating your relationship to God’s plan. Write a shared prayer dedicating your relationship to God’s plan.

🙏🏽Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the gift of covenant and companionship. Thank You for the blessing of a spouse to walk beside us through every season. Tonight, we come before You together—hands joined, hearts open.

Teach us to trust You with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding. When the path ahead feels uncertain, steady us. When obedience feels costly, strengthen us. When pride tries to divide us, humble us.

Help us choose unity over ego, prayer over assumption, and grace over frustration. Let our marriage be a place where Your presence dwells freely. Guard our conversations. Protect our peace. Cover our home.

Just as Mary and Joseph chose obedience even without clarity, help us to say yes to You together. Shape our love into something that reflects Your glory—steady, patient, sacrificial, and strong.

May our marriage not simply look blessed, but truly be surrendered.

In Jesus’ name, Amen. 🤍
